Course Description:
This course is intended for persons interested in collecting, building or learning more about “one-of a kind” furniture. Informal discussions and demonstrations will provide participants with a better appreciation for and understanding of the art of fine woodworking.
Session 1: An introduction to some outstanding studio furniture artists and their work. We will follow the construction of a few pieces to see how wood can be coaxed to do the unexpected. (1 ½ hours)
Session 2: A discussion of design issues including esthetically pleasing ways of proportioning space; importance of unity, repetition, and contrast; effects of color and texture. We will consider wood as a design material and focus on grain, figure and variety. We will discuss suggestions for generating design ideas. Each participant is encouraged to talk about his or her choices of furniture that illustrate good and poor design. (1 ½ hours)
Session 3 (Instructor’s studio): Hand and power tools typically found in a woodworker’s studio will be introduced and demonstrated as the instructor goes through the process of constructing a simple piece of furniture. (1 ½ hours)
